GNU/Linux is Slow to Compete Against Mac Mobile (Updated)
Apple announced the release of iPad during the event last Wednesday. That puts the GNU/Linux platform behind the mobile computing. Come to think of it, GNU/Linux haven’t even had any open source device that is equivalent to the iPod Touch. The Google Android OS is only available on some of the smart phones. For some people, like me, only need a device with Google Android OS on it but without paying monthly fee.
Fortunately, I found an open source device called Zii Egg that supports Android OS. When I first read about its hardware specs, I was surprised – it has more features than iPod Touch. The hardware components that are only available on Zii Egg include a SDHC card slot on the side of the device, a HD camera on the rear and a VGA camera in front of the device for better social interaction, a GPS receiver, and a microphone.
As you can see on the Zii Egg website, the device is currently on the development stage. I will definitely purchase this open source device once it’s on the market. Until then, I will stick with my jailbreaked iPod Touch.
UPDATE: I have found a list of the upcoming Android devices that are without phone compatibility: Technical specifications about upcoming Android Devices (This post was just out today, 02/02/2010)

[...] Zii Egg. As some of you who read the posts during the early stage of this blog may know, I was waiting for Zii Egg to be released as a consumer product for over five months. Within these months, I [...]
Robby please do your research before posting stuff like this. Yes, I realize that it drives page views, but you don’t have any advertising to make these kind of unfactual, poorly researched, articles worth doing.
Here is the truth:
“Apple announced the release of iPad during the event last Wednesday. That puts the GNU/Linux platform behind the mobile computing. ”
Not true, the Always Inovating Touchbook has been out for ~1 year.
“Come to think of it, GNU/Linux haven’t even had any open source device that is equivalent to the iPod Touch.”
What are the Nokia n770, n800, n810, n810 wimax edition, and archos 5? They are all iPod Touch competitors, and if I rememeber correcly the n770 and n800 were on the market first.
“The Google Android OS is only available on some of the smart phones. For some people, like me, only need a device with Google Android OS on it but without paying monthly fee.”

“GNU/Linux haven’t even had any open source device that is equivalent to the iPod Touch.”
Maybe not 100% open source, but we’ve had at least the Maemo devices from Nokia, all the way back to the N770 from 2005. Android isn’t exactly 100% FLOSS either: http://cool900.blogspot.com/2009/10/comparing-freedom-on-maemo-and-android.html
But I don’t think there’s any need for pocket sized web tablets anymore. Why would I want one device for surfing and one for calling? The only reason I see is battery life, but I’d rather carry an extra battery than an extra device.
Your topic is totally wrong since Linux is not competing with Apple or Microsoft, it’s only competing against OS X and Windows (respectively.)
In addition, it’s not up to Linux to develop hardware like Apple does. Linux’s job is to support hardware that has been developed (or will be developed.) So, blame hardware manufactures for not supporting Linux.
